Frequently Asked Questions
You have questions and we have answers!
Can parents/guardians run with their child?
Parents or guardians of runners under the age of 8 may run with their child in the George Dashington or Caboose Run. We prefer runners complete the event on their own but understand some runners need a bit of reassurance. No parents may run with participants in the Express. You must indicate at packet pick-up that you will be running and sign a waiver. The runner’s bib will be marked with a sticker to indicate they are running with an adult. The parent/guardian must run with the child throughout the whole course and may not enter or exit the course. Only 1 parent or guardian may run with a child. Please do not pull or carry your runner to the finish.
If your runner has special needs please contact us and we can discuss what can be done: firstname.lastname@example.org
Can siblings run together?
Siblings who are running in the same event who are close in age may run together. Please indicate this when you register your runner. There are no guarantees that siblings will be able to run together but we will make every effort to accommodate requests. Our first priority is the safety of the runners and that will be the first consideration when reviewing any request.
Can friends run together?
If they are close in age they may be in the same wave starts but no special accommodations will be made to ensure this. With the number of runners participating in the event it becomes very difficult to satisfy the amount of special requests.
What if I become separated from my runner?
If your runner is lost, please notify a volunteer or staff member. We have procedures in place for locating lost children. We will also have a designated table in the finish area for lost children where a volunteer will help link the runner back up with their parent/guardian.
Do I need to wear a mask?
Due to the event being for young runners we ask that masks be worn while in the staging/start line area and while in the finish line area. Participants in the race do not need to wear a mask while running. Masks will be available at the start and finish areas for those that need them.
Where are the bathrooms on race day?
There will be porta-potties at the library and at the finish line. Additionally the Visitors Center has public bathrooms that will be open early at 7am on race day.
Will there be an awards ceremony?
Not in 2021. When we began planning the Great Train Race this year we felt it best not to create a situation where participants congregated. All awards will be mailed to winners this year. Therefore we also stuck to prizes that could be mailed easily so there will not be trophies this year. Not to worry we got some really cool prizes from our supporters! Results will be posted online as soon as they are compiled.
I was first in my wave… did I win?
Maybe… maybe not. Keep in mind, with the 25 runner wave format a faster runner could run in a different wave. Your time/place will be based on your net or “chip” time; essentially the time from when the runner actually crosses the start line until the time they cross the finish line. So there is no need to push to the front of the wave in order to get the best time.
Can I pickup my shirt and bib on race day?
No, all race packets must be picked-up Friday or Saturday before the race. Refer to the information page for the details on packet pickup.
